My Career Plans

Personally I am looking to go into a career of marketing management. The reason I want to do this is because it combines my studying of both media and music. In order to achieve this I studied Media at GCSE level and started learning guitar and bass. At college I am now studying Music and Media Btec level 3 subsidiary diploma in order to extend my knowledge in this field of work. I have also applied to study Marketing management at University which also includes a year of work experience doing marketing management for a company. Once I have obtained my degree I aim to do the marketing for a record company or for a band. This will consist of making the designs for their albums and gig posters as well as merchandise, Venue marketing, Finance management. I feel this would be a good career to pursue as the work load consists of tasks I find fun and would be willing to work and fulfil. To gain experience for this I have played in a band to understand how the performance side of music works. Alongside this I am recording a single soon and will design the artwork for it then find ways to market my own single.

How I Would Market Myself

In order to get a job as a Marketing Manager I would market myself as a hard working creative individual who strives for success. I would show off my talent so that people have a direct understanding of what I am capable of. I would appear as Firm but Fair in the sense that I would work hard and push clients to their full potential but in return be fun and calm with them.  In order for the employer to see examples of work I had done to go alongside my CV I would create an online portfolio displaying a range of projects I had worked on so that they had an idea of my skills and talents. As well as this I would create a business based Instagram account to show off more of my work and make it appeal to the public eye.

Salaries

Based on my research I fell overall it would be better to be employed by a big marketing firm as you will be on a fixed wage which allows you to have a steady income and not have to worry about earning less due to working less or failing to meet clients needs. Whilst being employed there is still a progression ladder that allows room for promotions and therefore a high paid salary. Alongside this working for a firm allows connections with bigger companies that have a bigger net worth, where as being self employed you would not have these connections and it could therefore being more of a struggle to find well paying clients.

My Portfolio

Personal statement draft

Every day my eyes are drawn to a good advert whilst going through my day: on the bus on my way to work, when walking home from college in a window; When I am doing my research or homework on the internet. This combing with my interest in media studies helped me work out that developing a career in the advertising and marketing field of work would be ideal job and a great opportunity for me. The idea of a single poster or television advert influencing thousands to millions of people to buy a product astounds me.

After spending a large amount of time researching different university courses and career paths that allow me to gain access to working in the advertising and marketing I found that studying Marketing Management would be a fantastic opportunity as well as gateway into a career in my ideal type of job. Doing a Course that specialises in marketing management would benefit me a lot as I also take great interest in the idea of managing a team or managing an assignment. Due to working in retail I already have experience in this as there have been numerous times I have had to take control of a department or task such as making sure an isle in the store gets remodelled or training a new member of staff. To be able to combine this trait with studying Marketing and advertising would be a very good way for me to then progress.

Currently I am studying at Worthing college participating in a wide range of subjects. These include: Creative media, Applied science and Music. As well as this I also have completed A- level Media Studies.  I feel that each of these subjects benefit me when studying the Marketing course each for different reasons. I feel the music will benefit me as it is a very creative subject meaning that innovative ideas and creating new ways of thinking are essential similar to the marketing course where I will be required to be original and good at coming up with new ideas. On the other hand, studying science has given me the ability to successfully understand and analyse data and research which will also be used in marketing when it comes to field research and client data. Finally, Media will benefit me in not just studying a marketing course but in day to day life as it gives a new way of looking at everything in life and I have now found myself to be a lot more analytical just when looking at adverts in the street or when watching films with my family.

As well as college benefiting me with new skills both my jobs have given me access to new opportunities and life skills. For example, working as a barman in a local pub has allowed me to gain better people skills and communication skills. As well as this it has also helped me improve with working as part of a team. As well as this working at ASDA has allowed me to work part of a bigger team as well as take leadership and train new members of staff. ASDA have an aim of make a pound. The objective of this aim is whenever you get the chance to try and use the moment to make a pound if you can whether it is running to the warehouse to get a requested product or reducing the price of an item as opposed to throwing it away. When the opportunity rises I put 100% effort into trying to help complete this objective. Overall I am a confident person who works well both in a team and individually, I am very analytical and organised with a good open mind and passion for media and marketing.
