My Music Practice Diary

Section A
  • i play guitar bass and am starting to learn piano I've been playing guitar and bass for about 2 years. my main focus for my pieces shall be played on guitar. Ive had a couple of lessons with david bennett my friends brother who is a qualified guitar tutor
  • Im not sure on my ability as I'm a self taught guitar player and have not earned any grades however some examples of pieces i can play are : i bet you look good on the dance floor - arctic monkeys , supersonic- oasis and basket case - greenday
  • i have a lot of experience in playing in a group as I've played many a time with friend groups and am currently in a punk band called noxville as a rhythm guitarist.
  • My strengths as a guitarist are rock and punk songs with some pop/ indie styles too. I tend to play better in a group or band as I'm perdominantly a rhythm guitarist. Im not great at scales and solos but i practice them a lot and exercise my fingers in order to achieve the style of solos well and use each finger individually, i can easily learn a song through tabature and hearing the song but I'm very weak at sight reading and playing through notation, Im great at rehearsing but struggle with music theory. my live rehearsal techniques are great as I've studied and looked at examples of good stage presence
  • I don't have a great knowledge of scales the only one I'm familiar with is the pentatonic scale
  • I have a rather good knowledge of chords and i can play most of the major and minor chords and I'm not chords involving adds or sus
  • i enjoy basically all genres of music from hip-hop to punk and rock i tend to play rock punk and pop. Im hoping my band gets big as I'm currently in contact with a big californian record label owner who is robbie fields who owns posh boy records which owns bands such as black flag and agent orange
Section B
  •  I tend to practice for an hour to two hours trying out different songs learning new ones and teaching my self new things such as scales and chord patterns
  • I aim to practice at least once or twice a day sometimes more and occasionally less but very rarely
  • I have a solid structure for a days practice. First i start with some basic finger exercises be it a pentatonic scale or hammer ons and pull offs, then i well alternate amp settings and save them to my amp for example i have a overdriven distorted setting for punk rock and grunge. a clean tone for indie and pop. a tiny bit of gain with reverb for britpop such as rolling stones and the beatles. then i will go through some songs then go through some solos or learn new songs.
  • I will learn via tabs on ultimate guitar then listen to the song to develop the right strumming pattern. then i will play the song through until i am able to play it the whole way through without mistakes or stoping. then i will play the song on repeat without stopping to completely master it
  • I think my whole practice routine is rather well thought and planned out as it helps me to master songs and complete my whole routine which adds to my ability and help develop my skill level
  • I personally fell i should spend more time looking into music theory and more scales and different techniques i also need to train my little finger to work better independently as i struggle to use my ring finger and little finger individually
  • The difference between playing over pieces and purposeful practice is that playing over a piece gets use to the timings and progression of specific songs whereas purposeful practice develops skill and ability with precise techniques and you learn and adapt to doing the exact techniques, scales and progressions. all in all purposeful practice is a lot more beneficial skill wise
