Development of pop music

Today in groups we made big diagrams on the floor of music genres, eras and bands which we then had to sort and organize to display the bands in there genre and which decade they started in.  We did this to help us with our presentations we have to complete and to help broaden our knowledge of music and genres from across the decades for example I learnt that the artist jamiroquai which i hadn't heard of where part of a genre called acid jazz which I also hadn't heard of. I learnt that jamiroquai fit into the genre of acid jazz due to the tempo, pace and sounds of the song for example his songs have alot of electronic backing to give it a psychedelic feel.

Relying on live performance not sales
Censorship
Guitar effects
More electronic
better percussion/ Equipment
Manufactured bands
Lyrics/song meaning
Production - technology/ quality of a record
accessibility of music
voice autotune
multi-track recording

A good example of a band that has changed over time is Green day. Green day became big in 1994 with there album "dookie" which was mainly focused on teenage angst and distortion and had a real punk sound to it. However in 2012 with the release of an album trilogy with uno dos and tre all being released at the same time. and having now aged there songs a lyrics now had a more mature feel to them having aged. piano was now used a lot more and had other vocals such as using women in some songs. One song in particular "X-kid" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCfKUt3JCVA) from the album tre was Billie Joe Armstrong looking back on his younger self. Green days newer songs were a lot less distorted  and had a calmer feel. For example the Song "the forgotten" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rs2m3lhg-k) was piano based and was featured in the film twilight where as an older song from green days youth like "welcome to paradise" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR7R9Kuw2fY) was much faster heavier distortion and husky vocals.

Green days newer albums have now become more mass produced on bigger recording labels and has much more mainstream fanbase as opposed to their underground punk fanbase from their old albums like insomniac and Nimrod. Green days older music use to be heavily drug related and had alot of meaning of drugs for example "basket case" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTwJo0HeNmU) however due to Billie joes breakdown in 2012 there music is now much more censored. although they still swear they dont advertise and promote drugs. Surprisingly this dosen't conform to most modern music as songs these days are usually about sex and drinking for example "drunken love"9https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-w3efdYFEc) by beyonce whereas back in the 60's this topic was unheard of in music for example "we can work it out"(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qyclqo_AV2M) by the Beatles.
